Our History

Sigma Phi Omega Inc. was founded by 17 women in 1949 at the University of Southern California amidst lingering anti-Asian sentiment left behind by World War II. At the time, women of Asian descent were generally not allowed into sororities. Initially, our founding mothers were invited to join Chi Alpha Delta and start a chapter at USC.  However, they decided to form their own sorority instead. The Greek letters were chosen at random and were not used by any other existing fraternities or sororities at the time.Although we did not originate as a sorority, one could speculate that the choice of Greek letters was a public way of voicing a dissatisfactory opinion about the treatment of Asian Americans, specifically Japanese Americans, by the campus and Greek Organizations. Sigma Phi Omega is the oldest continuous Asian-American sorority at USC and has helped young women adjust to college life for over sixty years. College is a time for new faces, endeavors, and experiences. Among this whirlwind of unfamiliarity, being in a sorority can help brighten your path and put things into perspective. It provides a base for lasting friendships and special memories. Sigma Phi Omega prides itself on its diversity in membership as we embrace the unique qualities and gifts each sister brings. Our alumni have gone onto successful careers in business, law, medicine, entertainment, and education.

SERVICE

"The reward is in the doing."

As an organization, we want to give back to our community. We don’t volunteer because we expect a reward, we do it because it helps the people around us. Some volunteering events we do include packaging boxes of food and water at the local food bank; helping our environment; and keeping our city clean in local communities.

We not only volunteer, but we also hold fundraisers to raise money for those that have been or are currently being affected by domestic violence and need help getting back on their feet. Our goal through these service and volunteer events is to help people find their voice, speak up, and help make an impact in not only our own lives, but the people surrounding us too.

ACADEMICS

Our organization strongly emphasizes on succeeding academically and being involved on campus. We believe that a well-rounded individual should have varied interests that enables them to grow in all directions. We often study together in groups, and provide resources that are available to help us broaden our knowledge.

SOCIAL

Aside from chasing our dreams, you can find us hanging out and having a great time together! As part of the Multicultural Greek Council, we host many mixers and socials with other organizations on campus. We are eager to reach out to other organizations as well outside of our council so that we can build new bonds. In addition, we host several sisterhood events to strengthen our sisterhood, as well as expand our network.
